Part of our Emergency Dental Care comprehensive series.
Dental emergencies do not wait for convenient times. A cracked tooth on a Friday night, a knocked-out tooth during a sports game, or sudden swelling that makes it hard to breathe — these situations demand fast, professional care. At AZ Dental Club, we reserve same-day emergency slots at all three of our Phoenix metro locations to ensure you get the urgent care you need.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every toothache requires immediate attention, but some symptoms should never be ignored. Seek emergency care immediately if you experience:
- Severe, unrelenting tooth pain, especially when accompanied by swelling or fever.
- A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth. Time is critical; the tooth has the best chance of survival if replanted within 60 minutes.
- A cracked or broken tooth, particularly if the inner nerve is exposed.
- An abscess or pus. This is a small pus-filled bump on the gums indicating a serious infection that can spread rapidly throughout the mouth or body.
- Uncontrolled bleeding after an injury or a recent extraction.
- Jaw injury or suspected fracture. If you suspect a broken jaw, go to the Emergency Room first, then follow up with a dentist.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Common Dental Emergencies
While calling an emergency dentist is your first priority, what you do immediately after an accident can dramatically improve your chances of a full recovery. Here are vital tooth-saving tips:
1. Knocked-Out Tooth
In many cases, a tooth that has been cleanly knocked out by an impact can be successfully replanted if attended to within an hour.
- Do: Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root.
- Do: Rinse gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub.
- Do: Try to place it back into the socket and hold it in place. If it won’t stay, place it in a container of cold milk or a saline (salt water) solution to keep the root alive.
- Do Not: Store the tooth in plain water. Water causes the root cells to swell and die rapidly.
2. Dislodged or Loose Tooth
If the tooth has been knocked loose but hasn’t come free of the socket, you generally have around a 24-hour window.
- Do Not: Attempt to push it back into the socket or manipulate it in any way.
- Do: Use an ice pack on your cheek to keep swelling down and see a dentist as soon as possible.
3. Severe Toothaches
Toothaches are usually caused by exposed nerves (from severe decay) or an active infection.
- Do: Rinse your mouth with warm water and attempt to gently floss around the painful area to dislodge trapped food.
- Do: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there is swelling.
- Do Not: Place aspirin directly against the gums near the aching tooth, as this can cause severe chemical burns to your gum tissue.
4. Lost Fillings or Crowns
Modern dental adhesives are incredibly strong, but crowns and fillings can still be dislodged.
- Do: Save the lost crown or filling if possible; your dentist might be able to reattach it.
- Do: For a short-term fix to protect the exposed hole, place a small piece of sugar-free gum over the area. (Ensure it is completely sugar-free to avoid excruciating pain!)
- Note: If you accidentally swallow the filling or crown, do not panic. It will typically pass harmlessly, but inform your dentist so a replacement can be made.
5. Broken Braces
If an accident breaks your braces, it risks causing further orthodontic problems and introduces sharp metal edges into the mouth.
- Do: Use a cotton ball or a small piece of orthodontic wax/gauze to cover any sharp, protruding wire pieces to prevent cuts and infections in your mouth. Then, see your orthodontist or emergency dentist for repairs.
